Polar Bear Chopsticks
These handcrafted chopsticks showcase delicate mother-of-pearl inlay, arranged in a polar bear design. Each pair is meticulously crafted in Toyama, Japan, by master Japanese craftsman Musashigawa Takeshi, a fourth-generation specialist in raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) – a tradition passed down through generations of skilled artisans.
Craftsmanship Rooted in Tradition
These chopsticks are made from natural cherry wood and coated with layers of urushi, a natural lacquer derived from tree sap. The wiping lacquer technique (拭き漆, fuki-urushi) used in their creation reveals the wood's natural grain while providing a smooth, durable finish. The decorative bear, fish and stars are crafted from abalone shell and meticulously inlaid using the centuries-old raden technique, which is renowned for its intricate beauty.
Musashigawa Takeshi is a recognized ‘Traditional Craftsman’ by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, making these chopsticks a unique work of art and a testament to Japan’s rich lacquerware heritage.
