We are honoured to welcome Tango Tanimura, the 20th-generation chasen tea whisk craftsman from the legendary Tanimura family of Takayama, Nara. His family has been producing chasen for nearly 500 years, and today, Mr Tanimura is regarded as one of Japan’s most celebrated artisans. His handcrafted whisks are favoured by the Grand Masters of Urasenke and Mushakōjisenke, and the family once held the prestigious position of official chasen makers to the Tokugawa Shogunate—who bestowed upon them the professional name “Tango.”

During his brief visit to the UK, Mr Tanimura will join us for an intimate workshop at MATCHADO Acton Café. This is a rare opportunity to see his remarkable craftsmanship up close, learn about the history and cultural significance of chasen, and experience a piece of Japan’s tea tradition firsthand.

What to Expect

• Live demonstration (60 mins): Watch Mr Tanimura perform his centuries-old bamboo whisk-making techniques—skills passed down father to son for 20 generations.
• Try the final step of chasen making (15 mins): Weaving the thread into the base of the whisk prongs. 
• Matcha tasting (15 mins): Enjoy a warming MATCHADO matcha served with a small sweet.

Tickets for the event include your very own handcrafted chasen by Mr Tanimura — a rare masterpiece of craftsmanship, as his whisks are in exceptionally high demand. Only 10 of these exquisite tea whisks will be available at the event, making this a truly special opportunity to take one home.
